Horticultural Education Director

Job Role: Horticultural Education Director

Position Summary: 

The Horticultural Education Director at the Greenwich Botanical Center is a role devoted to educating people of all ages, experience and backgrounds in horticulture, botany, gardening, plant science and conservation. This position is an exciting opportunity for someone who loves teaching people about plants and gathering qualified professionals and amateurs to do the same. The Horticultural Education Director will be responsible for planning a year-round calendar of educational opportunities, teaching workshops themselves, and managing the greenhouse operation as it serves those activities and other events hosted by the GBC. This position will report to GBC’s Executive Director.

 
Role and Responsibilities: 
  • Building a robust and diverse annual calendar of professionals and amateurs to teach botany, gardening and horticultural classes and workshops for a variety of audiences
    • Research local, regional, and national field specialists to engage
    • Liaise with local amateurs who have specific teachable gardening & plant skills
  • Create and lead botany, gardening and horticultural classes and workshops for adults; young adults, and children
    • Creation, scheduling, and teaching an optimal number of educational workshops per month or workshop series per year
  • Manage greenhouse operations to maximize the educational potential of the building and create an environment of learning and exploration
    • Create rotating horticultural and botanical exhibits and demonstrations
    • Maintain easily accessible botanical library
    • Ensure greenhouse mechanical systems are maintained and repaired, as needed
  • Planting and Maintenance of GBC Teaching Vegetable Garden
  • Liaise and support Forest Days/Youth Programming/Field Trips
  • Support seasonal GBC Events
    • May Gardener’s Market
    • Wreath Making Workshops
    • Grandiflora Garden Tour
    • Seasonal Plant Sales
  • Supervise small number of temporary high school and college interns
  • Coordination of greenhouse volunteers to support all of the above, as needed
  • Interest in and enthusiasm for regular engagement and collaboration with all GBC stakeholders, e.g. board members, staff, volunteers, members and visitors
  • Other ad hoc responsibilities as indicated by the Executive Director

Qualifications and Experience: 
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Horticulture, Botany, or equivalent education required
  • Teaching and curriculum development experience in classroom or field
  • Budget, propagation, plant stock, and greenhouse management experience
  • Flexible, adaptable, and versatile in response to changing situations and needs of a small non-profit
  • Great sense of humor, optimistic outlook, entrepreneurial approach, positive attitude: all a huge plus
  • Basic Microsoft Office skills

Work Hours; Compensation and Benefits:
  • Work Schedule: M – F 9-4 or Tues – Sat 9-4
  • PTO: 10 days plus 5 days between Christmas and New Year’s holidays; and Federal Holidays
  • Compensation: $45 – 55K depending on qualifications
  • Compensatory time awarded for weekends and evening hours, to be approved by ED
  • Professional development opportunities are encouraged and subject to approval by the ED
  • Bonus and/or annual salary increase may be awarded based on performance and availability of funding
