For more than 10,000 years, baskets have helped people gather, carry, store, and harvest the bounty of the land. From collecting seeds and vegetables to transporting flowers and herbs, basketry remains one of the most practical—and beautiful—craft traditions still used in gardens today.

Join Alexander Widener, decorator, collector, and founder of Widener Company, for a hands-on workshop exploring the rich history and enduring usefulness of basketry. Along the way, you'll discover how different basket forms evolved to serve specific purposes, from gathering and harvest baskets to specialized designs for garlic, feathers, and more. You'll also learn about the traditional natural materials used by basket makers, including reed, willow, and ash.

Then it's time to weave. Guided step-by-step by Alexander, participants will create their own small harvesting basket (6”x6" base, 4" tall, 8" handle) with a classic oak handle, a charming and functional piece perfect for collecting flowers, herbs, vegetables, or treasures from the garden. Part history lesson, part creative workshop, this immersive experience celebrates craftsmanship, utility, and our long connection to the natural world. Whether you're a gardener, design enthusiast, or simply curious about traditional handcrafts, you'll leave with a deeper appreciation for this timeless art form—and a handmade basket to enjoy for years to come.  Recommended for ages 18+

About Alexander Widener:

Alexander Widener is a natural storyteller, decorator, and collector who brings a keen, narrative eye to every room. His love of textiles, heritage objects, and interiors started in childhood and grew into a career in marketing at Matouk, Sister Parish Textiles, and Samuel & Sons. As the founder and creative force behind Widener Company - an interiors shop and guest cottage in an 18th‑century clapboard home along the coast of Maine, Alexander curates antiques, housewares, and textiles with a sharp editorial sensibility. In his work and on social media, he leans into craftsmanship, design history, and education, creating a world of design that feels attainable.

With a community of highly engaged followers and a physical space that embodies his point of view, Alexander sits at the intersection of interiors, content, and commerce. He is a uniquely credible collaborator: part marketer, part merchant, part collector, and committed to telling the kinds of stories that build loyalty, and long‑term value. Alexander has quickly become a media darling and has been featured in publications including Architectural Digest, House Beautiful, Country Living, The New York Times Magazine, and on Nightline.
